The new facelift deeply repositions the facial muscles

The new technique is able to treat all layers of the face, reaching down to the muscle, for a more long-lasting and less artificial result.

Why are so many people talking about the new redesign? What has changed, anyway? Called the Deep Plane Facelift, this new technique is seen as a major “upgrade,” as it also repositions the muscles of the face.

“This technique allows for a very broad and natural rejuvenation of the face, as it specifically treats all layers of aging. Another important point is that the result is maintained longer since the face has been treated on a global level”, comments Paolo Rubez, plastic surgeon, member of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery, of the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS) and of the Brazilian Association Board of Plastic Surgery (BAPS).

With the technique, the stereotype of the artificial face with tight skin falls away.

“Deep Plane means a deep restyling. The name comes from the fact that the procedure treats everything from the deepest layers of the face to the superficial ones. Aging occurs globally on the face, affecting all layers, and this surgery treats them all, except the bone. The facelift initially treated only the skin layer of the face, relaxing it and eliminating excess skin. This has led to very artificial and stigmatized results,” says Paolo.

“Its evolution was to start treating deeper layers such as the SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System), the tissue that covers the muscles, using stitches to reposition them. Deep Plane differs in the treatment of SMAS, in a deeper way and guaranteeing a better and more lasting repositioning of the anatomy altered by age”, explains the doctor, master in Plastic Surgery at Unifesp.

Treat the deep layers of the face

The superiority of the technique, according to Paolo, lies in the fact that it treats the deep layers of the face better and in the long duration of the treatment.

«The indication is similar to that of a traditional facelift, i.e. when there are signs of sagging and aging of the face. If we think about age, it is especially recommended for patients who are on average over 45 years old and who already show signs of aging such as sagging skin and loss of facial volume”, comments the specialist.

The surgery is performed through incisions around the ear and under the chin, so that the scars are barely visible after a few months, according to the doctor.

“It lasts approximately 5-6 hours and is carried out in a hospital environment for patient safety. The anesthesia is general and the patient has to stay in hospital for a day,” she says.

Pre and post procedure assistance

As regards pre- and post-procedure care, the doctor reminds you that, before the operation, the patient must be in good clinical condition and must not use drugs that increase bleeding close to the operation, such as aspirin and anti-inflammatories.

“After surgery it is normal to feel swelling and purpleness on the face, which improves within two to three weeks. It is not common for there to be pain after surgery. The patient must remain at relative rest for two or three weeks and refrain from physical activities for 30 days. Also, you should avoid the sun for two months. It is essential that the operation is performed by a plastic surgeon”, concludes Paolo Rubez.
