Cleaning carpets with vinegar is a favorite of Mary Marlowe Leverett, who has a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics and has been writing about textile care and stain removal for more than 20 years. Here’s how to do it correctly:

  • Mix one part white vinegar and three parts cold water in a spray bottle.
  • Mentally divide the mat into sections of one meter by one meter. Wet them thoroughly.
  • Wait five minutes to give the cleaning solution time to do its job.
  • Pour clean water into a bucket, dip a microfiber cloth in it, wipe the carpet, rinsing it regularly.
  • Let the carpet dry. To speed up the process, open windows and doors or use a fan.

If you need to get rid of stains, Mark Tarbox, owner of a cleaning company, recommends making a carpet stain remover from vinegar and sparkling mineral water. Mix them in a spray bottle in a 1:1 ratio, wet the mark, wait 10-15 minutes, then apply a dry sponge to the area so that it absorbs the mixture and the dirt dissolved by it. Repeat the procedure until the stain disappears.

  • Apply the solution to the carpet, wait a few minutes and scrub the surface with a brush.
  • Remove any remaining soap solution and dirt with a microfiber cloth, dampening it in clean water.

How to clean a carpet thoroughly: the main rules

  1. If you want to see if your carpet needs cleaning, vacuum it then scrub it with a damp white towel or towel. Has it become very dirty? It’s time for water treatments!
  2. Do you have a steam mop or steam cleaner? Use them: Steam cleaning carpets is very simple and effective. Instead of detergent, you can use a 1:1 solution of white vinegar and water.
  3. Before deep cleaning, be sure to vacuum the carpet thoroughly. You can also go over it with a sticky roller, which picks up pet hair better than a vacuum cleaner.
  4. If you decide to use a new product to clean your carpet, test it on a small area first to understand how the finished product or solution will affect the color and condition of the pile.
  5. If there are stains on the carpet, treat them separately, choosing a suitable recipe: for example, for ink you need medical alcohol, for coffee a mixture of prick, mild soap without colorings and water.
  6. Plan your “route” in advance: start cleaning the carpet from the corner farthest from the door – this way you won’t step on wet hairs. If you’re using a vacuum cleaner on carpet, move it twice as slowly as you would on a smooth floor.
  7. If your carpet still looks dirty or smells after a deep cleaning, let it dry for a few hours and then repeat the process.
  8. Don’t skip the rinse cycle: whatever solution you choose, any remaining residue should be rinsed away. Do not move furniture or walk on wet carpet. Wait six to eight hours before doing this.
