The new version of ‘Voa Brasil’ is expected to launch in March

According to the Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa and Filho, 22 million Brazilians should initially benefit from the new program

In an interview on the program Roda Viva on Monday (18), the Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho (Republican), indicated the launch of a new version of the “Voa Brasil” program by the end of March.

The project envisaged offering plane tickets for R$200 to a part of the population, however, according to Costa Filho, the impression that the benefit would be accessible to all Brazilians led to the proposal being reformulated.

“The way it was broadcast by sectors of the press and sectors of Brazilian society, due to social networks, the Brazilian people thought that the ticket was worth R$200. It would be crazy for us to develop a program of this type,” he said the minister.

Initially, the new program should serve 21 million pensioners receiving up to two minimum wages and 700 thousand students from the Single Portal for Access to Higher Education (Prouni), the minister said. The head of the department clarified that five million tickets will be issued at more affordable prices, without using public money. Costa Filho did not mention whether the price of R$200 per ticket will be maintained.

According to Costa and Filho, Brazil has a flight inactivity rate of between 18 and 21%. The project needs to utilize this unused capacity and fill empty seats, especially during the low season (mid-February to June and August to November).

The minister stressed that one of the objectives of the program is to stimulate tourism in the months when fewer people travel. However, the advantage will not be limited to the low season and passengers will be able to purchase tickets throughout the year through the “Voa Brasil” website. The minister, however, expressed the reservation that during the high season the available flights are instead lower.
