Recife celebrates Frevo Day with special programming

Dancers, orchestras and groups will occupy Praça do Marco Zero. The Paço do Frevo Museum is a must-see all year round

The frenetic music, the colorful clothes and the umbrella leave no doubt: what’s coming is cool! This Friday 9 February, the carnival joy of the streets of Recife, in Pernambuco, meets the celebration of 117 years of frevo, considered an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

The folkloric rhythm arose from the rivalry between military bands and former slaves, who competed in the streets in processions at the end of the 19th century. When the Pernambuco Carnival overflowed halls reserved for the elite, the frevo also became popular, especially in Recife and Olinda. Today it reinvents itself with pop elements, but maintains the tradition of being a mix of capoeira, maxixe and polka.
