Uberaba: Brazil gets another UNESCO world geopark

It is the sixth geopark in Brazil recognized by UNESCO […]

Recently, Brazil had another region recognized as a World Geopark, a title of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in Uberaba, Minas Gerais.

Located in the Triângulo Mineiro, the municipality is the sixth in the country to receive this recognition, which takes into account the international relevance based on protection, education and sustainable development.

In addition to the “Land of the Giants” in Minas Gerais, Brazil holds this title in Araripe (between CE, PE and PI), Seridó (RN), Caminhos dos Cânions do Sul (SC and RS), Caçapa do Sul (RS) and Fourth Colony (LOL). In the world there are 213 geoparks in 48 countries.

“The international approval of UNESCO allows these geoparks to stand out as territories of sustainable development, as well as becoming internationally renowned tourism products. In this way, Brazil increases its competitiveness and visibility in this type of tourism,” he said the General Coordinator of Tourist Products and Experiences of the Ministry of Tourism, Fabiana Oliveira, in a note sent to Travel by fare.

What is a Geopark?

Created in 1990 to enhance and conserve areas of geological importance, a geopark hosts landscapes and geological formations that bear witness to the evolution of the planet, in unique and unified geographical areas.

According to the Geological Survey of Brazil, a geopark is a unique area, whose landscape of international importance has a holistic management of protection, education and sustainable development.

Again according to the SGB, to be declared a geopark, the place must “generate economic activities, in particular through tourism, and involve a series of geological sites of scientific importance and with potential educational or tourist use”.

Uberaba Geopark

It might seem like a scientist’s question, but tourism in areas called geoparks is like listening to the Earth tell the story of its evolution, based on disciplines such as archaeology, geology and paleontology.

And just visiting a stone world like that makes us want to travel to all the others, where there is always a trail to hike, a kayak down the river or a visit to a family of dinosaurs.

Uberaba Geopark

In the case of the Uberaba Geopark, almost 500 kilometers from Belo Horizonte, the highlight are the countless and different species of fossils, in an area of 4,540.51 km² in length.

The region is home to seven geosites (geological sites with formations of important scientific value), such as Caieira and Serra da Galga, International Geological Heritage; and Ponte Alta, Peirópolis, Santa Rita, Univerdecidade and Vale Encantado, classified as of local and regional significance.

The Peirópolis Geosite represents an effective possibility to get closer to the Paleontological Heritage. Historically, the neighborhood of Peirópolis represents the headquarters of the region’s paleontology, whose scientific importance was revealed through the work of Llewellyn Price, pioneer of studies in Uberaba.
