Research reveals young people’s views on open relationships; I wait

According to research, Generation Z is the most likely to seek open or non-monogamous relationships in general

Even if the traditional relationships between two people are still the most common, the Brazilian Generation Z has increasingly looked for other role models. This is what emerges from a survey conducted by Ashley Madison, a site dedicated to extramarital affairs.

According to the research, conducted in collaboration with YouGov and based on young people aged between 18 and 29, this age group is much more progressive and comfortable with the concept of non-monogamy than previous generations. Most respondents (62%) said they were willing to try open relationships.

This number is higher than all other countries included in the survey, including the UK, US, Mexico, Spain and Canada.

Generation Z and non-monogamy

According to research, 59% of Generation Z want open or polyamorous relationships. Among the most cited advantages of these modalities are “more complete sexual and/or romantic life experiences” (65%) and “open-mindedness/acceptance towards different forms of love” (54%).

Respondents agree that the main reason for seeking external/multiple partners is because their sexual needs cannot be met by just one person. Regarding gender, 21% of women surveyed said they couldn’t be happy and monogamous, while only 15% of men said the same.

The Ashley Madison member survey also indicated that women tend to be more sexually adventurous than men. For example, they are three times more likely than men to have physical intimacy with one or more people of the same sex (15% vs. 5%).

Privacy

The survey also found that Generation Z tends to want to preserve their privacy when it comes to relationships. So much so that more than 60% of those surveyed reported that they usually don’t announce when they start a relationship with someone.

This may seem a little strange, given that this generation tends to share everything on social media, but the reason is simple. For respondents it simply doesn’t seem necessary to continue counting (62%).

Of those who have gone public with their relationship, 81% indicated they prefer to do a “soft reveal” of their new relationship, slowly and subtly releasing content introducing their partner.
