MDP or MDF: which is better? Depends!

Are you wondering which wood is worth investing in? We tell you everything!

For those who are renovating their home or looking for new pieces to transform the look of the interior, the question always arises as to which wood to select. The types MDP AND MDF end up being the most popular when it comes to furniture.

Both are produced by same tree, pine or eucalyptus, and its use in parts production is economical and functional. But after all, MDP or MDF, which is better? This cruel doubt depends on the purpose and use of the furniture, as both have advantages. The architect Bruno Moraes, who directs the BMA Study Office explains the difference between the materials and advice for the best use of each of them.

What is MDP?

Acronym for Medium density chipboard, this particle board is made of wood particles bonded with synthetic resins, using temperature and high pressure. With three layersone thick (the core) and two thin (the surfaces), the configuration gives greater uniformity to the material.

For this reason the MDP is more robust and has good stability and resistance to screws. Since it is well structured, it can bear a large weight load. Don’t confuse MDP with particle board. This creates cheaper furniture with scrap wood and glue, which makes it fall apart very easily.

What is MDF?

MDP or MDF: which is better? Depends!

Also known as Medium density fiberboardis a reconstituted wood panel, produced by wood fibers and synthetic resins. The plates are placed on top of each other and fixed with pressure and heat.

MDF has good stability, just like MDP. The ability to make cuts in different directions results in rounded and shaped pieces, allowing you to put all your creativity into the design. Its uniform and solid material facilitates the creation of elegant and sophisticated finishes.

MDF x MDP: differences

With the integrated kitchen you must be careful not to miss any opportunity to expand the storage corners, always, obviously, taking care not to overload the design: here the furniture made in carpentry performs the double function of a buffet, without compromising the aesthetics.

An MDF sheet is made up of wood fibers and synthetic resin which give rise to a uniform mass. By having a top fill, it is easier to make cuts in different shapes and directions, especially curved, depending on the gaps and particles. “In these cases, MDP would result in an uneven finish with burrs,” explains the professional.

Made of pressed wood, between which it is possible to see air spaces, the MDP sheet differs from MDF precisely in this sense. While the former constitutes a solid and completely filled mass, the latter allows these small spaces to accumulate oxygen.

“Both materials are widely used in the production of various furniture and generally have laminated finishes, which make them identical when the furniture is ready. The difference lies in the handling possibilities and usage characteristics,” explains Bruno Moraes.

Which is the most resistant?

Here the office is in a private place, but integrated into the living space. The spacious table (65 cm deep and 2.8 m long) can accommodate up to three people. While the wheeled drawers move quickly from side to side, the chairs are height adjustable.

Since both are very good and have high durability, what you need to analyze is the environment and use.

MDF, for example, is not water resistant, while MDP is better for humid environments, making it difficult to expand and wear. MDP has more weight, but MDF is more resistant to friction. MDP offers a range of cladding possibilities.

When to use one or the other?

For the client working with video games, the project adopted woody-looking MDF. In the blue upper cabinet, the open cabinets are perfect for displaying the geek collection and, overall, the wall of shelves allows for ample storage space and a special look for the workspace.

According to the architect, before deciding on one or the other, it is necessary to evaluate the For what purpose will the materials be used?. In itself, the MDF is dense, versatile, more resistant to friction, its smooth surface accepts painting well and is easy to cut. they allow you to create furniture with different designs and combinations between the most diverse projects. However, Bruno recommends it It should be used with caution in humid environmentssince in contact with water it is common for swelling to form.

Already the MDP is more resistant to weight and has better applicability in humid environments due to the spaces between the wood particles which prevent rapid swelling. By its characteristics, it is Recommended only for making straight cuts and, due to its porosity, it makes it difficult to remove and replace screws, which can wear the furniture more easily.

What is the best wood for furniture?

Responsible for bringing color and functionality to this well-integrated living room and kitchen, the joinery hides the refrigerator and laundry area in this 83 m³ apartment and is just one of many examples of possible solutions to solve the furniture.

There is no best option for furniture in general, but rather for every type of situation. Choose MDF if you are looking for specific finishes and formats. More homogeneous appearance, malleability and resistance to rubbing. And choose MDP when receiving paints and varnishes, remembering that its surface is uneven, waterproof and will not be damaged by contact with moisture. Mixing the two could also be a possibility, bringing the best of both worlds. With high security, design and functionality.

In general terms, according to Bruno Moraes, the MDF it is generally indicated for countertops, shelves or round tables. “It’s also perfect for delicate details like slatted panels,” she points out. Already the MDP can be elected to containers or shelves for bathroom furniture that must support a heavier load such as cabinets, wardrobes or pantries.

It is possible to use both materials in the same piece of furniture. For example, kitchen cabinet lids and boxes may contain MDP, as they will be attached to the wall and in contact with plumbing fixtures. The doors and drawers are made of MDF, especially if there are manufacturing details or rounded cuts.

In his projects, Bruno usually uses MDF to work with smooth, matte color mixtures and woody shades. He underlines that the definition of the materials also depends on the references requested by the residents. “I try to analyze the characteristics of my customers and their preferences in the color palette. I also consider that the finish should last well for at least 10-15 years,” he emphasizes.

It is not so simple to specify the best material, hardware and cost-benefit ratio for carpentry. That said, it’s a good idea to seek out a professional to help define the project and create a budget.

Which is best to use in your wardrobe and closets?

The Living and Dining project by architect Cristina Menezes mixes modern elements with 1960s architecture. The bookcase was developed by the architect and is made with MDP modules, from Berneck, produced according to sustainability concepts.

For straight pieces – such as doors, shelves and drawers – MDP is a great choice, offering greater structural strength, as well as having a lower cost.

If you are looking for easier handling and a smoother surface, which allows for different finishes – such as lacquer painting, veneer gluing, pattern printing, etc. – MDF is ideal – and is the most used in carpentry.
