The conclusion was obtained from research at Columbia University. This isn’t the first study to reveal a link between pregnancy and aging.
Ok, it’s pretty obvious that all the tiredness and stress accumulated during pregnancy can, in fact, make a woman age faster. Now, however, two studies serve as the basis for this empirical conclusion.
The most recent was conducted by the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University in New York and published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. According to studywho analyzed blood samples from 825 young women in the Philippines, researchers found that each pregnancy was associated with two to three additional months of biological aging.
“Our findings suggest that pregnancy accelerates biological aging and that these effects are evident in young, high-fertility women. Our findings are also the first to follow the same women over time, linking changes in the number of pregnancies per woman to changes in the number of pregnancies her biological age,” said Calen Ryan, lead author of the study.
All research participants were born in the same year, and researchers took into account participants’ socioeconomic status, smoking habits, genetic variation and environment.
Another analysis, published in March in the scientific journal Cellular metabolism, had also come to a similar conclusion. Analyzing blood samples from 119 pregnant American women, researchers found that mothers age as they get closer to giving birth, making the DNA in their cells appear two years older than at the start of pregnancy.
The good news is that this aging appears to be reversed for most women three months after giving birth. And look at this curiosity: the DNA templates were rejuvenated to a pre-pregnancy state. Some mothers, those who breastfed in the first three months after giving birth, became biologically “younger” than before by up to eight years “indicating a marked reversal of biological aging”.
