A preview released on Thursday 18 April by the Union of Hotel Employers of the City of Rio de Janeiro (HotéisRio) shows that room occupancy over the weekend of 3 to 5 May has already exceeded 80% in the Copacabana neighborhoods and Leme. The trend is that the percentage continues to rise with the demand generated by the singer Madonna’s concert on Copacabana beach, scheduled for Saturday 4 May.
The two southern districts of the city recorded 83.38% room occupancy, while the center 67.95% and Ipanema/Leblon 67.53%.
HotéisRio uses the expression “Madonna Effect” to classify the demand and shows that the average occupancy of hotels in the city is 70.79% for the weekend (3 to 5 May) of the show.
Maximum capacity
“The trend is for Copacabana, home of the show, to approach maximum capacity. Subsequently, demand will spread to nearby regions, which offer transportation options,” said HotéisRio president Alfredo Lopes.
Rio’s city hall hopes to earn a large sum of money from the singer’s free performance on the city’s most famous beach. According to forecasts released by the Secretariat for Urban and Economic Development (SMDUE), in collaboration with the Secretariat for Tourism (SMTUR), only the extra collection of the Service Tax (ISS) in May should recover the investment of 10 million R$ that City Hall made in the show. The month should have a collection 20% higher than in 2023, according to the secretariats’ project.
“Singer Madonna’s show, in Copacabana, on May 4, will boost Rio’s economy by R$293.4 million, a value 30 times higher than the R$10 million invested by Rio city hall in sponsorships”, explains the municipality.
The operational scheme of the fair will be announced on Friday morning (19th) at a press conference, but the presentation has been postponed to the 25th. On that date the municipality and the state government will present the operational logistics and safety plans for the presentation.
