Makeup has become increasingly popular among children, but parents must be careful not to harm their children.
Imagine the following scene: A child sees lipstick or eye shadow in a grocery store. tricks and asks the parents. He even says that all his friends already use it. It’s hard to say no, isn’t it? However, despite being increasingly common, the the use of these products by children and adolescents may pose a problem.
“One of the greatest risks is that of allergies, because the skin of adolescents or children tends to be much more sensitive and intolerant than that of more mature skin, so the risk of allergies is high”, explains Dr. Fernanda Nichelle, doctor who works exclusively in the aesthetic area.
Furthermore, children made to worry so early about these types of things, including comparing themselves not only to peers and friends but also to unattainable standards on social media, can cause serious mental health problems.
Less harmful types of makeup
Dr. Fernanda Nichelle advises against children wearing makeup in any way, however on some specific occasions this may happen. For example, if she is going to a theater show or dressing up for a party.
In these cases, the doctor recommends looking for hypoallergenic or children’s makeup that already exists on the market today and is free of many more irritating active ingredients. “They must be free of parabens and also any active skin-treating ingredients, and they are makeup products that are highly tolerated by patients,” she explains.
In the case of that type of makeup already sold as “children”, it is to be expected that the makeup will be with these more appropriate formulas. However, it is always better to check, to avoid the risk of causing allergies or other problems with the baby’s skin, mouth or even eyes.
So be careful: it’s better to do your makeup later, unless it’s a very special occasion. Talk to the child so that he understands the reasons for this. It will depend on the right age to wear makeup, according to Dr. Fernanda Nichelle.
«There is no age limit to allow the use of make-up, what does exist is the skin tolerability and the type of product that will be applied. There are patients who, even at an advanced age, if they use makeup that contains too strong an active ingredient, they will not be able to use it”, he concludes.
