“If I hadn’t called the ambulance when I did, the doctors said I could have died in my sleep. People need to be aware of how dangerous sepsis is if they don’t act quickly,” said the woman, who lives in London, at the tabloid The sun.
The case occurred in 2023, when Khedidja and her partner Shawn Ayton, 32, were awaiting the birth of their twins. The couple, parents of two children, said they were surprised by the pregnancy, but said they were “eager” to expand their family.
The pregnancy went without incident, Khedidja explained, and at five months the couple knew they were expecting a couple. The birth, via natural birth, took place in April last year in a few days at Saint George Hospital, in London.
The family was then medically discharged the day after the birth. Khedidja said she was exhausted after arriving home, but nothing different than expected. However, the next day, her mother began having severe stomach pain while she was breastfeeding the newborns.
The pain progressed to severe nausea, diarrhea, and pain throughout the body. “A week after giving birth, I thought I was going to die,” said the mother, who stressed: “Even though the health workers thought I was fine, my instinct was to call the ambulance.”

Sepsis diagnosis
Upon arriving at the hospital, Khedidja recalls being admitted with low blood pressure, a rapid heartbeat and that she even fainted. Taken to an intensive care unit (ICU), doctors discovered that the woman may have inflammation in the wounds caused by childbirth.
“Everything happened very quickly, the doctors said that I had an abscess in my uterus and that I would have to have surgery to drain it. My limbs and nose were already black”, said the woman who, once she regained consciousness, was informed from the partner that the infection had progressed to sepsis.
The woman spent a month in hospital and reported suffering from hallucinations. It was then that doctors informed her that she would have to have her limbs amputated.
“I begged them not to do it, but they said there was nothing they could do to stop it, the skin was already dead. For a few months I went to the rehabilitation center and met other amputees, who told me that life was not going to stop This made me more optimistic,” the mother said.
Khedidja had both legs amputated at the knee, his left arm at the elbow and his right hand amputated after sepsis. She remained hospitalized until October, when she was transferred to a rehabilitation center. The British woman received prosthetics at the end of December.

Now her mother says she can walk alone and is gradually gaining her independence. As for her children, who turned one last April, Khedidja says she can now take them with her and is enjoying their childhood.
“My life may have been turned upside down, but at least my babies and my older children still have their mother. I want to raise awareness about the risks of sepsis, it ravaged my body and almost killed me. If you have similar symptoms, call for help immediately,” he concluded.
