The actress will star in ‘Piece of Me’; The surprising plot of the character is rare and to date only 20 cases are known in the world
Two boys, twins, each of the children is the son of a different father. This is how Juliana Paes presents the drama of Liana, her character in Netflix’s first Brazilian melodramatic series, “Pedaço de Mim”, which does not yet have a release date.
The case chosen to illustrate the plot is known as heteropaternal superfertilization, when two eggs from the same woman are fertilized by the semen of two different men during a single menstrual cycle.

To understand the condition, the Earth you she spoke with the obstetrician-gynecologist specializing in human reproduction, Waldemar Carvalho, who explained this extremely rare type of pregnancy in humans to her.
“It can happen when a woman who is ovulating has sex with different men in a short period of time. One egg is fertilized by one partner, the other by the next partner,” explains the expert.
The doctor states that in some women there may be a genetic predisposition to multiple ovulation, especially if there is a family history of twin pregnancies (non-identical or fraternal twins).
Only 20 cases in the world
Currently only about twenty cases are known in the world, according to an investigation from the laboratory of the Population Genetics and Identification Group of the National University of Colombia.
It is important not to confuse heteropaternal pregnancy with pregnancy of fraternal twins, also known as fraternal twins. However, in both cases, babies develop in different placentas. The doctor explains that situations like this are difficult to diagnose with imaging tests.
“The exam can raise some suspicion, for example, when one child grows more than the other. But even so this is not a determining factor, since it can also occur in a twin pregnancy with only one father. So during pregnancy there is no way to identify it,” says the midwife.
How to discover “double” paternity?
Regarding medical advances that allow us to discover the paternity of some children during pregnancy, there are already DNA tests that can be carried out starting from the ninth week of pregnancy. However, some doctors advise against it, as there is a risk of miscarriage, vaginal bleeding, uterine contractions, leakage of amniotic fluid, infection, procedure failure, and transmission of infections.
From the teaser it is not possible to know when Liana discovers that the twins are each the son of a different father, but only the circumstances in which this happened. But it is very likely that she will speak to the viewer in the future, after the birth of the children and the possible DNA test.
