Vaccination in schools is approved by the Senate; see what can change

The project involves health teams visiting public teaching units and is now turning to Lula for sanction

OR Senate approved this Tuesday 21st the bill 826/2019, which establishes the National vaccination program in public schools. The program requires vaccination teams to visit public schools or schools that receive public resources to offer vaccines to kindergarten and elementary school students. The project now goes to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), who can sanction or veto the measure. The expectation is that he will be sanctioned.

Proposed in 2019 by federal deputy Domingos Sávio (then of the PSDB and now affiliated with the PL of Minas Gerais), the project was presented to the Senate in September last year. Supported by the federal government, it was approved on Tuesday in a symbolic way, without counting the votes, but with a record of opposition from senators Damares Alves (Republicanos-DF), Cleitinho (Republicanos-MG), Eduardo Girão (Novo-CE) . and Rogério Marinho (PL-RN).

The bill does not provide for compulsory vaccination, but the opposition was against an article which stipulates that parents or guardians who received notification of vaccination at school must attend school within 30 days, otherwise a team will arrive at their home of student vaccinators to guide their family on the importance of vaccination. Senator Jaques Wagner (PT-BA), head of the House government, has pledged to veto this section of the law by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

The program provides that, in agreement with the nearest health unit, each school schedules a visit from the vaccinators. Parents or guardians must be informed at least five days in advance so that they do not fail to take their children to school on that day and bring the vaccination card with them.

If doses become available, vaccination will be extended to other people in the community who are advised to take it.
