The architect reveals how to use this furniture to create a welcoming and elegant environment
Timeless, surprising and elegant are some of the adjectives we can apply to the curved sofa. It may not seem like it at first glance, but its arched design reveals its multifaceted and versatile style, capable of creating both furnishings with details that hark back to the past, and an environment with a sophisticated style, especially if covered in velvet.
Let’s go back to interior projects
Although the design has been neglected for a few decades, in recent times the curved sofa has regained its place in interior design, proving to be a wild card. What if it was first adopted as an anthem to elegant furniture from the fifties and sixties, or even as a way of setting trends, the current reading adds a new proposal to experiment with: furniture unites, strengthens coexistence and brings comfort.
According to architect Ana Rozenblit, the biggest advantage of the curved sofa is that it fits perfectly, easily and into any environment, unlike a straight-line sofa. “I really like the flexibility and different dynamics it brings to the space,” she reveals. “And its use goes far beyond the living room: I tend to specify it also in the decoration of the bedroom, as well as on the balconies,” she says.
Choosing a sofa doesn’t just depend on measurements
Making the right choice of sofa size involves many variables, but doing the right math isn’t that complicated. Above all, it is necessary to take into account the surface area available and the proposed furnishing proposal. Having the possibility to compose both larger and more compact projects, it is necessary to take into consideration some criteria.
“It is essential to analyze both the measurements available in the space and the relationship with the other environments, especially if integrated. For example, a sofa with a large structure positioned near the entrance of a small flat, can give a dissonant air. The furniture can be suitable for the room in which it was considered, but above all it must ‘dialogue’ with the surrounding environment”, evaluates Ana Rozenblit.
Thinking about placement, the curved model can take on the function of a corner sofa, providing more circulation space in a small living room, or it can be arranged as a “loose” piece, demarcating integrated spaces. To avoid errors, the architect recommends a distance of 1.5 m, which allows the passage of liquids to the resident.

Using the curved sofa in the furniture
It is important that the design of the curved sofa is in harmony with the prevailing decor in the room. Since it is a piece of furniture that takes center stage and attracts attention, the architect explains that it is the counterpoint among all elements It is necessary so that it doesn’t steal the show. “Of course, the curved sofa is special, but the balance must be applied precisely so that other furniture and objects do not disappear,” she adds.
Colors for the sofa
As for colors, in the case of small rooms, for example, or for residents with preferences for minimalist, classic or classic clean, the advice is to opt for curved sofas in a palette of light tones such as white, beige and light grey. Now, if the intention is to explore the exuberance of the design and create a more youthful and relaxed environment, the project can invest in the application of strong colors, such as yellow, orange, green, blue and purple, among other possibilities. “In the composition I always like to create color and movement with cushions and accessories. Whether in a corner of a balcony or in a living room, I used moss green, pink, bubblegum pink and rust orange”, says the architect.
Ideal place for him
As regards the layout of the spaces, in rectangular-shaped environments, the professional recommends choosing a prominent wall to accommodate the curved sofa. In square environments the recommendation is to bring the furniture closer to the center, allowing people to move around them. And for those who don’t give up mat as a complement, it is possible to provide square, rectangular or round versions, as long as it fills the entire part underneath the curved sofa.
In addition to adding beauty to the furniture, the curved sofa should have the task of adding comfort to the environment, so it is worth considering a covering that really gives a feeling of well-being. In this mix, pillows are very welcome, as they decorate and bring comfort.
Tips for using a curved sofa
Curved sofas are a growing trend in interior design, combining elegance and functionality. However, to highlight the design of the furniture in the environment, it is necessary to use some tips, such as:
- Keep the area around the sofa clear: make sure there is enough space around the sofa for comfortable movement. Avoid placing furniture or other objects too close together, as this may block access and create a feeling of oppression;
- Investing in lighting: place lamps of flooring on one or both ends of the sofa to create a welcoming atmosphere and adequately illuminate the seating area. If you prefer, install recessed lights in the ceiling to highlight the shape of the sofa without overwhelming the room with table lamps;
- Place decorative objects correctly: use paintings or mirrors above the sofa to balance the height of the furniture and fill the wall elegantly;
- Use sofa protectors: To keep the upholstery clean and the furniture durable, use fabric or leather protectors, this prevents stains and wear, especially if the sofa is in an area of heavy use.
