Ricardo Teodoro, Ronaldo from Baby, evaluates character and awards at Cannes

Actor was voted Best New Actor in Critics’ Week at the 63rd edition of the festival

The miner Ricardo Teodoro and the Best New Actor from the Semaine de La Critique at the Cannes Film Festival. As Ronaldo, Teodoro stars in the new film Babyin Marcelo Caetano.

In the plot, Ronaldo is a prostitute and responsible for welcoming and turning around the life of Baby, recently released from the penitentiary system in São Paulo. The actor spoke to Rolling Stone and spoke about the role and the feeling after the awards, where Baby premiered worldwide on the 21st.

“Ronaldo, a guy who went to the city of São Paulo many years ago, with the idea of improvement, like so many other Brazilians, and then the city center became his backyard. And because he lives in the city center, he is a guy who I think, as an actor, from our research, has the ability to adapt to survive in the largest city of São Paulo, in the center of that city. And everything it offers, the relationships that are established through that difficulty that is when a social issue weighs on you.”

Between social vulnerability and stigma, Teodoro ponders the human factor and Ronaldo’s desire to live.

“But one very interesting thing about this character, something that I and the Marcelo, we talked a lot during the process, it was the idea of not seeing him as a victimized guy, but on the contrary, he has a lot of desire to live, he has a lot of joy in his eyes, the characters in the film have a lot of joy in their eyes. And the difficulty is social, but it’s not their fault,” he highlights.

“So it’s like me, we have a difficult social condition, but even so, we still have hope in our eyes. And this is a Brazilian thing, a very Brazilian thing for us. Everything we go through, we have gone through, we still have hope, we still have a sparkle in our eyes and this character portrays that. I think it’s very clear to look at the screen and realize this character.”

Baby is a Brazil-Netherlands-France co-production and is scheduled to premiere in the second half of 2024 here in Brazil.
