Can you rest on vacation?

Signs that the holidays have arrived: the plan was to go grocery shopping, but the chain was very tasty; the idea was to read a book, but the nap was interrupted

Taking a holiday is an art. Rest for rest’s sake. Vacations are not trips to visit family, for example; And not even tourists with little time, with lists of things to do and tours, peaks to explore and dishes to try. There is no peace, sometimes there is adventure; in others, uninterrupted absorption of news, learning. And this is even tiring. Holidays are something else.

Because we live our lives governed by clocks and calendars, it’s natural that, on our first days off, we try a utilitarian approach to free time: today, hike to the top of the hill; tomorrow boat trip on the river. Only after a few days, if your heart is in the right place and the scenario is favorable, the holiday will actually take place.

When, suddenly, there is plenty of sky to look at and hours of the day to experience. Little by little, the only miserable task of the afternoon, for example going to the supermarket to buy toilet paper, is left aside. Because the mains is very tasty. I went to read a book, took a nap. Everything is for tomorrow.

As the days pass, the wardrobe repeats itself, the mosquitoes are less annoying, the silences become increasingly longer and more comfortable; sleep, sublime. Linear time ceases to exist. And suddenly the clock and the calendar no longer matter. You sleep and wake up whenever you feel like it. There is so much energy and so many hours in the day, everything we miss in the city. And, when the time comes to go home, in the first few days, all that rush is scary. For what, folks?

Then weeks pass and the machine swallows everyone. Totally or partially. I resist, but I am still certain that, on the next really beautiful holiday, I will have to learn, once again, to calm down inside to live fully out here.
