Vai-Vai launches a petition to stay in Bexiga

To remain in the neighborhood of origin, the School proposes an exchange with the Municipality […]

Just like in an update of Saudosa Maloca by Adoniran Barbosa, “the assassins came with the tools” to demolish the headquarters of the Vai-Vai samba school which, for the traditional 50 years, was located in Bexiga.

Due to the construction of the future Station 14 Bis of the Metro Orange Line 6, the traditional samba school of São Paulo saw its premises demolished in 2021 in the central region of São Paulo.

To compensate for the historic loss, Acciona, the company in charge of the works, then purchased the space for the School, which would be delivered nine months later. However, the land on Rua Almirante Marques Leão, also in Bexiga, has several limitations that would prevent the construction of the future headquarters of the School.

The Go-Go impasse

According to the petition launched by the Grêmio Recreativo Cultural e Social da Escola, the land region is located in the ZEIS-3 zone (Special Area of Social Interest category 3) which, in municipal legislation, is predominantly low-income residential.

Therefore, according to the determination of the Court of Justice of São Paulo, in response to Public Civil Action n. 1024380-95.2022.8.26.0100 filed by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the work in progress had to be suspended, “under the thesis that a new headquarters in that place could bring a large flow of people and noise to the region”.

To guarantee his permanence in the neighborhood of origin, the School proposes an exchange with the Municipality of the City of São Paulo, thus selling the land on Rua Almirante Marques Leão for the construction of social housing, allocating it to the black population in a vulnerable situation who already lives in the neighborhood.

The School’s proposal is instead the expropriation, and subsequent transfer to Vai-Vai, of the properties that were once the headquarters of the Zaccaro Theater, the Cine Rex and the annexed building, all located in Rua Rui Barbosa at numbers 322, 294. , 272 and 266.

Among the arguments justifying the exchange, the School recalled that the property was empty and was built for 17 years, guaranteeing “not only the social function of the property, but also ensuring the permanence of the Vai-Vai Samba School in its neighborhood of origin, an authentic place of memory, of the representation of black memory, a place of samba, traditionally located in the central area of the city”.
