The brain is responsible for emotions, but the heart is the great symbol of dates like Valentine’s Day
OR Saint Valentine (06/12) is a special date that celebrates love and affection for another person. And, although we know that the brain is the main organ involved in the emotional part, the great symbol of this date is, without a doubt, the heart. But is there any relationship between the organ and our emotions?
The relationship between love and heart
According to cardiologist Dr. Roberto Yano it is possible to observe the effects of the feeling of love on the heart. However, they are fleeting and non-causal.
“Emotional health is closely linked to the functioning of the heart because, for example, during positive feelings there is the release of feel-good hormones, such as serotonin and dopamine, which contribute to keeping blood pressure more regular, also reducing stress , which positively affects the heart”, explains the cardiologist.
However, these effects are not so significant as to cause any harm, but only generate feelings of well-being, the famous “butterflies in the stomach”.
“In other words, the heart is not linked to the ‘creation’ of feeling, this process is directed by the brain, but the emotional part generates impacts throughout the body, on the nervous, immune and circulatory systems,” says Roberto Yano.
Emotional health and effects on cardiovascular health
However, dysregulated emotional health can significantly impact cardiovascular health, especially when it causes stress and anxiety, increasing blood pressure. In extreme cases, especially when the person already has a previous heart disease, it can even cause a heart attack.
“When someone is under strong emotion, the body experiences a large rush of adrenaline, a hormone that increases glucose levels, increases heart rate, raises blood pressure and releases other stimulating substances, which exposes the heart to enormous stress” , warns Roberto.
According to him, this stress caused by situations of great emotion, positive or negative, in healthy people can only cause slight discomfort, such as after a scare. “And in people with serious pre-existing heart problems it can even lead to an acute myocardial infarction”, concludes the cardiologist.
