Oxytocin is produced in the hypothalamus and released into the bloodstream by the pituitary gland, and has become known as the “love hormone” for its primary function: facilitating childbirth. Like endorphins or serotonin, it promotes positive feelings.

According to Silas Soares, specialist in integrative and functional health, it is a hormone directly linked to the patient’s well-being. “When its level is high in the body, it brings numerous benefits to health, especially mental health, since it is responsible for the feeling of happiness, love, relaxation and pleasure,” he explains.

How it works: once released it automatically reduces levels of cortisol, the stress hormone. The doctor explains that this release occurs when we are close to people with whom we have a great affinity: partners, friends or relatives.

Oxytocin in men and women

According to the doctor, oxytocin is much more present in the female body and its production usually reaches its peak during pregnancy, labor and breastfeeding. This is the hormone that strengthens the emotional bond between mother and baby.

It is worth noting that continued use of contraceptive pills can cause a drop in oxytocin. Additionally, the level of oxytocin in men is lower, as the action is blocked testosterone.

“However, when it reaches a high level in the body, oxytocin is able to make them less aggressive, avoiding friction, and also to make them more kind and empathetic,” he recalls.

When we fall in love, oxytocin levels in the blood can double. The doctor also explains that the decline in the hormone occurs when relationships cool down or during a separation. This is where feelings of sadness and abandonment arise.

That said, the main signs of love hormone decline are related to apathy. Symptoms of decreased hormone levels include a decrease in libido, lack of lubrication during sexual intercourse, and a decreased ability to achieve orgasm.

How to increase oxytocin

To increase the hormone, the advice is to pay attention to factors such as routine, diet and medications. “There is sublingual oxytocin, its action is faster, allowing it to increase its bioavailability in the body. There is also oxytocin in tablets, this version has a slower action, but helps improve anxiety and mood, it can also increase feelings of well-being and vitality.”

Physical contact and affection, such as hugs, kisses, cuddles, also cause a feeling of gratitude, consequently increasing oxytocin levels in the body. Physical exercise or other activities cause physical and mental relaxation, consequently stress and anxiety will decrease, resulting in a decrease in the level of cortisol, the hormone that inhibits the production of oxytocin.

Oxytocin also has very physical implications: The love hormone can help regenerate heart tissueas a study of Frontiers in cell and developmental biology.
