The exhibition will present the first Barbie in history, the clothes from the Greta Gerwig film and also a section dedicated to Ken
In 2023, Barbie has conquered cinema, fashion, social media and even feminist debates. In 2024 the pink wave has passed, but there is still reason to talk about doll. On July 6, when she turns 65, the exhibition will be inaugurated Barbie: The Show to the Design Museum In London .
More than 250 objects including dolls, cars, toy furniture and the famous “dream houses” will be presented to tell the story of Barbie and her cultural impact. Design will be the underlying theme of the entire exhibition.
There will be more than 180 dolls alone. There will be the first version launched by Mattel in 1959, it is a blonde Barbie with a black and white striped swimsuit.
The original Barbie will be alongside other rarities such as the Day to Night version, from 1985, and the Totally Hair Barbie, from 1992, which totaled 10 million sales and became the best-selling in history.
To show how Barbie’s look has evolved over the years, newer toys will be featured, such as the first Black, Asian and Hispanic Barbies, as well as dolls in wheelchairs and with Down syndrome.
The doll universe will also include friends Midge, Christie and Teresa and Barbie’s little sister, Skipper. There will also be a section dedicated to the history of the Ken doll, created in 1961.
Some clothing used in the Greta Gerwig film and life-size replicas of iconic looks, such as the green and pink Poodle Parade doll, will be on display in the section that explores Barbie’s impact on fashion.
