Belo Horizonte: Oscar Niemeyer building reopens in the center

Architectural landmark of the capital of Minas Gerais, the building has undergone a major renovation and hosts an exhibition of decorations until Sunday (10)

Belo Horizonte was the first planned modern capital in Brazil, with the Pampulha complex being the most famous example. But you don’t have to go that far either. In the heart of BH, at the intersection of Afonso Pena and Amazonas avenues, is an Oscar Niemeyer-designed building that has just undergone a lengthy renovation and reopened in May.

The location is one of the most photogenic, with buildings with rounded corners that convey lightness and are a rest in the urban layout, almost always in straight lines. The main landmark of that piece is the obelisk of Praça 7 de Setembro, or simply “Praça 7 lollipop”. The Niemeyer building occupies one of the corners with facades extending along Rua Rio de Janeiro and Avenida Amazonas. The building is equipped with horizontal sunshades surrounding the facade, the so-called brise soleils, which give the building a Copan touch. The composition becomes even more interesting with the building of the Cine Theatro Brasil, inaugurated in 1932 as the first in the city under the influence of art deco.

In Niemeyer, opened in 1953 and with 25 floors, he ran the Banco Mineiro de Produção, which later became known as the Bemge building. Listed since 2016, the building has deteriorated and has just been reopened to house the center of the creative economy of Minas Gerais, the P7 Creative, tied to the state government.

Until Sunday (10) the place hosts the decoration exhibition Modern eternal . On six floors exhibit architects, designers and decorators. We recommend starting from the 23rd floor, with a visit to the room set up by Rodrigo Câmara, creator of the Casa Câmara antiques shop, based in Ouro Preto, which has an impeccable curation of furniture and decorative objects. The view of the city is a blast! Afterwards, it is worth going up to the terrace bar to get virtually a panoramic view of BH. Afterwards, it is worth going down the stairs, stopping at each floor. In the rooms overlooking the Amazonas Avenue, the absence of loopholes allows the city to enter, as in the case of the room designed by the architect Luciana Garcia.
