It’s strawberry time! Find out how to sanitize and keep them fresh for longer

Winter is the time of wild fruits; Since they are delicate, follow step by step to make them last longer in your refrigerator!

Winter has finally arrived and with it the season of delicious berries. Strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries… They are acidulous berries with bright colors and a surprising flavour! They also make great options to enjoy with fondue or on chocolate-dipped skewers at picnics, children’s parties or June celebrations.

Here I will explain step by step how to clean and preserve these delicate fruits so that they last longer in the refrigerator.

Phase 1: hygiene and disinfection

Like all fruit, it is essential to properly clean strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries before any preparation or consumption.

The ideal way to disinfect food is to immerse it in water with hypochlorite. The measurement is 4 teaspoons of hypochlorite for every liter of water, just immerse the food in this mixture and leave it to act for about 10 minutes.

Phase 2: drying

After cleaning and disinfecting, simply rinse and dry the berries very well with absorbent paper. To preserve them it is important that they are dry, this will make them last longer.

Step 3: Storage

I always prefer to use airtight pans and also place some paper towels or napkins in the bottom to “suction out” the moisture and help keep the pan dry, keeping the food fresher for longer.
