The risk of developing dementia may increase with age if you don’t get enough slow-wave sleep. According to one study, people over 60 are 27% more likely to develop dementia if they lose just 1% of that deep sleep each year. 2023 study.
Slow wave sleep is the third stage of a 90-minute human sleep cycle, lasting approximately 20 to 40 minutes. It is the most restful phase, in which brain waves and heart rate slow and blood pressure decreases.
Deep sleep strengthens our muscles, bones and immune system and prepares our brain to absorb more information. In 2023, another search found that individuals with Alzheimer’s-related brain changes performed better on memory tests when they got more slow-wave sleep.
“Slow-wave sleep, or deep sleep, supports brain aging in many ways, and we know that sleep improves the clearance of metabolic waste products from the brain, while also facilitating the clearance of proteins that clump together in Alzheimer’s,” said neuroscientist Matthew Pase of Monash University in Australia.
“However, until now we were unsure of the role of slow-wave sleep in the development of dementia. Our findings suggest that loss of slow-wave sleep may be a modifiable risk factor for dementia.”
