How to plant corn
If you haven’t started planting indoors yet and want to get started with corn, pay attention to the step-by-step guide below:
To start planting corn at home, you must first pay attention to whether the period chosen in your region is the correct one for the development of corn seeds. Plant corn lines in a flowerbed, respecting the distance of one meter between the rows and 25 cm between each plant. Deposit the seeds small dimples up to two fingers deep.
Leave the corn plants inside the sunniest place in your garden, since this type of cultivar loves contact with light very much. Furthermore, it must be kept in mind that the corn plant can reach almost two meters in height.
Watering, care and harvesting
Irrigation is essential for the good development of the corn field, since the lack of water can cause the production of few kernels in each ear.
From 90 days after sowing, you will be able to harvest your first ears, which can vary from 12 to 30 centimeters depending on the variety. It is important to harvest the cob when its “hairs” are dry and golden.
At this point the kernels will tighten on the cob, producing a white liquid when pierced. This is the ideal harvest point for green corn or sweet corn. If you have chosen to make popcorn corn, wait for the kernels to dry on the cob.
