Succulent plants, pebble covering, grass and swimming pool form a garden in the house

In this retreat, in the heart of São Paulo, the landscape adds the atmosphere of the courtyard to solutions for leisure and rest, as well as pots with spices

The desire of the residents – a couple with teenage children – was to transform the garden of the house into a meeting point, with defined spaces where they can relax to the sound of the murmur of water. Designed by São Paulo landscape architect Gilberto Elkis, the renovation began with the 80-square-meter area at the entrance.

“The modernity of the project lies in the way it explores different elements. The texture and shape of the foliage, the combination of succulent pots and the cladding with pebbles and grass make the whole dynamic, setting a welcoming tone,” says Gilbert.

At the other end of the house, the outdoor space is pure entertainment.

At the back of the residence, other surprises are presented in the other 190 square meters of outdoor space, including the tub-shaped swimming pool with a small beach at the end for those who want to take a swim or simply cool off.

The 3 x 10.20 m swimming pool is lined with 10 x 10 cm smooth Hijau stone slabs and has travertine edges (materials supplied by Palimanan). The wall (right) created a vertical garden with resistant foliage species to avoid dirtying the pool. Among these are asparagus, Portuguese lace, ivy and rhipsalis.

The green walls next to the pool and on the side of the terrace with the reflecting pool comfort the gaze, inviting contemplation. “The original jabuticabeira of the country became the main focus with the bench structure,” he adds. A planter installed near the dining nook served as a base for pots of spices and herbs, offering a permanent, soft aroma into the air as an extra treat.

To create a resting point, the jabuticabeira, the only species remaining in the lot, was surrounded by the wooden bench (Hydrotech) and the masonry planter covered with Sahara tetris stone (Palimanan).

With their small dimensions and sculptural shapes, these resistant plants gained visibility in the garden in front of the house, organized in pots (L'Oeil). The stone rose, kalanchoe and mayflower are some examples. Easy to care for, they require little watering and love the sun.

The terrace wall received the same varieties as the alley wall, planted in concrete blocks (NeoRex) to make the wooden stone (Pedras Bellas Artes) visible. The surface ends with the reflecting pool (1.30 x 4.20 m) made of 10 x 10 cm hitam stone (Palimanan). The water circulates in corten steel spouts (Sunto).
