Anvisa bans the use of phenol in health and aesthetic interventions 22 days after the death of a young person

The Agency informed that it is awaiting studies that demonstrate the safety of using the product; the man died after having the product applied by the influencer

The National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) published on Tuesday 25, a resolution which prohibits the importation, production, handling, marketing, advertising and use of phenol-based products in general health or aesthetic procedures.

According to the Agency, the precautionary measure aims to guarantee the health and physical integrity of the Brazilian population. Phenol is a caustic chemical used by dermatologists in deep chemical peels to treat wrinkles, skin blemishes, and scars.

“To date, no studies demonstrating the efficacy and safety of the phenol product for use in such procedures have been submitted to the Agency,” the statement reads.

The decision will remain in place while investigations are conducted into the potential harm associated with use of the chemical, which has been used in several cosmetic procedures.

Death of the young man

In early June, a 27-year-old man died after undergoing cosmetic surgery on his face with a technique called “phenol peeling” at a clinic in southern Sao Paulo. The study belongs to the influencer Natalia Becker, responsible for applying the product to the boy.

At the time, the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD) has issued a well-known warning technique on the treatment, specifying that phenol peeling “is an aesthetic procedure that requires extreme caution, given its invasive and aggressive nature, indicated only to treat cases of severe facial aging”.
