Childhood depression is more common and worrying than many people realize. Gladys Arnez, a child neurologist and neurodevelopmental specialist, warns of the need to recognize the signs and symptoms of this silent disorder, depression, that affects children.

“Depression does not choose age and, unfortunately, has become increasingly present during childhood. It is essential that parents, teachers and guardians are aware of the behaviors that may indicate psychological distress that, if left untreated, can cause a lot of damage in the little ones ‘lives”, says Gladys Arnez.

Among the symptoms to watch out for are the following:

Changes in appetite or weight (increase or decrease)

Changes in sleep patterns (insomnia or hypersomnia)

Social isolation and loss of interest in previously enjoyable activities

Excessive irritability or agitation

Frequent complaints of physical pain without apparent cause

Difficulty concentrating and decline in school performance

Frequent and unexplained crying

Regressive behavior (going back to how you did when you were younger)

Social and family isolation, along with thoughts of death or suicide

Feelings of hopelessness and low self-esteem

“Every child is unique and symptoms can vary. However, the presence of multiple signs should be a warning to seek professional help,” the specialist emphasizes.

Child neurology offers a valuable perspective on understanding depression in children, as it is often associated with chemical imbalances in the brain that can be treated.

Gladys Arnez, known for her work with botulinum toxin in neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy, migraines, stroke sequelae, and autism, stresses the importance of early treatment.

“The earlier treatment begins, the greater the chances of a full recovery and avoiding long-term complications,” he emphasizes.
