Bedroom Designed for Autistic Teens Has Dog-Shaped Headboard

“Quarto do Ico” embraces the specific needs and personality of the 14-year-old boy, passionate about music, literature and his dog Pipa.

Ico’s Room is an environment that highlights neurodiversity in the pursuit of a more inclusive society. The space marks the seventh participation of Alexandra Gandolfi at CASACOR Paraná.




The room had been carefully designed for an autistic teenager, considering his specific emotional, behavioral and sensory needs. To create an environment that makes Enrico feel at home, the professional, a PhD student in Neuroarchitecture, also draws on her personal experience with two neurodivergent children.

Music, books and Ico’s faithful companion, Pipa, were the main inspirations for the project. Each element of the environment represents an extension of your personality. For the 14-year-old boy, the bedroom is a place of relaxation, rest and reconnection. Therefore, all the solutions promote comfort.

To start with organic forms that drive the entire layout. Or roofDone 100% in PET bottlesit has acoustics that minimize external noise – essential for an autistic person. The panel that frames the bed and supports the bookcase invites the user to look at the outside world through the window. The carpet and the works of art also follow this format, which revives the origins of life and creates the feeling of “being at home”.

Other elements of biophilia bring Ico closer to nature, like the Olive Tree specially planted in the garden of the villa that hosts the exhibition. Seen through the openness of the space, the tree carries with it a beautiful and imposing symbolism.

Her favorite color, green, is applied in soft shades, which blend with neutral tones of off-white and beigemake up a welcoming color palette. The boy appreciates the touch of textures, that’s why Alessandra invests in different materials. Stand out handcrafted rug made of 100% wool and 100% textured cotton downa piece that provides the necessary feeling of weight while covered. Bed, headboard and armchair receive the softness of the Boucle Dorper fabric.

The highlight of this special composition is the BedIco’s favorite place in the room. A the headboard, designed by the architect, refers to the silhouette of Pipagiving the sensation of being in contact with your great companion even while you sleep, in addition to the soft texture that remains in contact with your face. The armchair, also designed by the professional, has different volumes to embrace you when you read or listen to music.

Organization is essential to the daily life of an autistic person, therefore, The bedroom is divided into a sleeping area, a relaxation area and a dressing area. Alessandra opts for a clean arrangement of the furniture, optimizing daily activities and avoiding visual pollution. The wardrobe is divided by typologythe cabinet is closed; the shelves are visible and the racks allow for height adjustment to separate items that will be used the next day; the bookcase keeps the titles “hidden”.

A automation is also an ally. In the room there is a tablet that accesses Ico’s Google calendar so that he can consult his structured routine, as well as providing task reminders, a solution that strengthens his independence and autonomy. In addition, the function creates scenes through dimming the lightscheck out the curtains and other aspects that make everyday life easier. The lighting design is 100% yellowish LED (2700k), applied indirectly to the panels and furniture. To ensure visual comfort, the ceiling does not receive any lighting.

Finally, to artwork signed by André Mendes reflects Ico’s appreciation for musicis hyperfocus. The lines present the teenager as a central character immersed in the sound universe. The mismatched colored balls give the feeling of musicality that permeates the entire being until it reaches the soul. Other round decorative objects continue this representation.
