What to Add to Water to Quickly Clean the Oven: Tips from Professional Cleaners

We have gathered recommendations from professional cleaners for you: here’s how to clean your oven quickly and effectively.

Sometimes you wonder if there are ways to quickly clean the oven – after all, everything that spills during cooking is usually “fried” tightly on the walls and bottom, and it takes a lot of time to scrub the stains. We have collected professional cleaning tips that will help you not waste a lot of time and effort. Here’s what you need to add to the water to make the dirt disappear in the blink of an eye.

Oven Cleaning Secrets: Where to Start

Before choosing what to clean your oven with, you need to do a little preparatory work: no product should be applied before following two simple rules.

  1. Start by removing dirt, dust and crumbs by vacuuming the oven with the crevice tool. If this doesn’t help you reach a hard-to-reach spot, use a toilet paper roll: place it over the hose, then flatten one end.
  2. Remove and wash the baking sheets: For example, you can sprinkle them generously with baking soda, then spray hydrogen peroxide on the baking soda layer using a spray bottle and let it sit overnight or for four hours – you will then remove everything, even the most stubborn stains without any effort.

You won’t need to search for the best oven cleaning products if you remove the dirt in time. If something spills, sprinkle the stain with salt immediately. Once the oven has cooled, you can easily remove any remaining dirt.

Soda and vinegar

“Baking soda and vinegar for cleaning the oven is a classic recipe that every housewife knows,” says cleaning company founder Sean Perry. This method is one of the simplest and most accessible: the two necessary ingredients can be found in any kitchen.

  • Mix baking soda and vinegar to form a thick paste.
  • Apply it to the walls, bottom and door of the oven for two hours.
  • Spray the paste with a 1:1 mixture of 9% white vinegar and water.
  • After half an hour, wipe off any remaining product with a clean cloth.

Vinegar and steam

Not ready to wait two and a half hours? Here’s how to clean the oven without chemicals in that case, advises Cyrus Bedvir, a cleaning expert at a company that produces kitchen appliances.

  • Boil two glasses of water in a saucepan.
  • Add the same amount of 9% white vinegar.
  • Place the mold in the preheated oven.
  • Wait 45 to 60 minutes.
  • Open the door gently and let the steam escape.
  • Wipe the oven with a sponge dampened with soapy water.
  • Remove any remaining residue with a clean, damp cloth.

“Cleaning the oven with steam and vinegar works very well: both ingredients are excellent for softening dirt and dissolving grease. If you don’t have a very severe case, you can shorten the soaking time: 10 to 15 minutes is enough,” Cyrus explains.

Lemon and water

Don’t like the smell of vinegar? Then you’ll need Bedvir’s recommended recipe for cleaning the oven with citric acid or lemon juice.

  • Mix two cups of water and the juice of two lemons in a saucepan.
  • Preheat oven to 250 degrees.
  • Place the pan in it for 30 to 40 minutes.
  • Allow the oven to cool and wipe it out with a clean, damp cloth.

Are there any stains left? “Take half a lemon, sprinkle the pulp with baking soda, then rub it over the mark like a sponge to help remove dirt and grease,” Cyrus says.

Ammonia and steam

There are oven cleaners designed for tough cases, and this recipe is one of them. You’ll need ammonia and it will take overnight to soak, but in the end you’ll get all the dirt out.

  • Preheat the oven to 200 degrees and turn it off.
  • Pour two cups of alcohol into a heatproof glass or ceramic bowl.
  • Place the bowl on the oven rack.
  • Place a pan of boiling water in the bottom of the oven.
  • In the morning, take out both products and wash the oven with soapy water.

Warning! Before opening the oven, make sure the kitchen is ventilated and be sure to wear a respirator to protect your lungs from ammonia fumes.

Borax and dishwashing liquid

Baking soda has a pH of 8 and borax has a pH of 9.5, making it a more effective oven cleaner that also works very quickly.

  • Mix one liter of hot water, two teaspoons of borax and two tablespoons of dishwashing liquid.
  • Spray the solution from a spray bottle onto the walls and bottom of the oven, wait 20 minutes.
  • Remove any remaining product with a cloth dampened with clean water.

Soda, just soda

According to cleaners, the number one folk remedy for cleaning the oven is soda: it alone is enough to fight dirt and grease.

  • Mix three tablespoons of soda and one and a half water.
  • Apply the resulting paste to the walls of the oven.
  • Wait 20 minutes and rinse the product.

“If you’re looking for easy ways to clean your oven, this is the one to go for. I’ve tried a lot of tricks, but using baking soda is probably the best. Borax might work a little better, but you won’t find it in every household like baking soda,” Perry says.

Tips for cleaning the oven

  • Use a hard dishwasher tablet: soak it in water, rub it on the stains and they will disappear quickly.
  • Hard-to-reach places in the oven can be cleaned with a toothbrush – its soft bristles will definitely not damage the enamel.
  • Aluminum foil can help remove stubborn stains: roll it into a ball and rub it over the stains.
  • You can also use a salt scrub: pour a large amount onto a damp sponge and rub the stain with it.
  • If there are any stains in the oven that have not been softened, remove them with a pumice stone.
