Porsche to End Production of Current 718 Cayman and Boxster in 2025

The new generation of the current Porsche 718 Cayman and Boxster will be fully electric and should reach the European market in the middle of next year

The Porsche lineup will have major changes next year. After the Macan, it will be the turn of the sporty 718 Cayman and 718 Boxster to acquire a new, fully electric generation. However, unlike the SUV, which retained the previous generation with inline combustion engines, the current pair will no longer be produced in mid-2025.

The information was confirmed by Porsche Production Director Albrecht Reimold in an interview with the German website Automobilwoche. According to the executive, the current Porsche 718 Cayman and 718 Boxster will be replaced by an electric car that promises to be a lot of fun. Like the current models, it will have coupé and cabriolet body options.

Based on recent images of the new Porsche 718 on test, it is possible to see that the new generation of the model should acquire lines inspired by the Taycan, such as smaller LED headlights and bumpers with larger air intakes. At the rear, the lights will be unified and have thinner lines.

The convertible will have a fabric roof, like the current model, and the interior will have a similar layout to the new Macan EV, Panamera and 911, with a focus on the digital dashboard, media center and third screen for the front passenger. The platform will be the Premium Platform Electric (PPE), developed in collaboration with Audi.

Porsche will also retain the 718 name. After it, the German brand also intends to electrify the Cayenne and Panamera models, which should gain new features in the coming years. The last fully electrified model of the automaker will be the 911, which got its first hybrid version just two months ago.

As for the current combustion-engined Macan, in some markets the current model is expected to coexist with the electric version until the end of 2025. In Europe, this was phased out at the beginning of this year due to the continent’s new, much stricter emissions regulations.

New Porsche Macan EV

According to Albrecht Reimold, Porsche decided to discontinue the current combustion-engined Macan because the model has already been on the market for 10 years – despite the facelift. As a result, the brand preferred to invest in a completely new model, on a more modern platform.
