Step by Step: Customize a Stool with Fabric and Paint

In a few hours the stool can say goodbye to the neutral tone of the wood and acquire a lively mix of colors and designs. Copying is easy, easy

Customizing furniture is one of San Paolo’s favorite hobbies. Doris Alberto. She has already decorated several objects by combining freehand painting and the application of paper, fabric and even napkins for decoupage. “Mixing techniques usually give good results,” she says. Here she teaches you how to personalize a piece with paint and fabric. And she offers a tip: “I prefer cotton ones, because synthetic ones are transparent. Chita is a great choice: she is cute, cheerful and very economical.”

1- Sand the furniture first with sheet no. 100 and then with sheet no. 150. Clean with a damp cloth. Apply two coats of white paint and wait for it to dry.

2- Apply diluted glue (nine parts glue to one part water) to the area you want to cover.

3- Position the fabric leaving it well stretched.

4- Once dry, apply another glue solution to the cloth: this time six parts water to four parts water. Let it dry again.

5- Cut off the excess fabric as close as possible.

6- To remove burrs, sand carefully with n. 100 paper until worn.

7- Paint the legs of the bench with craft paint. Use your creativity: here the colors present in the fabric print have been chosen.

8- Spray paint gives the finish.

9- In a few hours, the stool can say goodbye to the neutral tone of the wood and acquire a lively mix of colors and designs. Copying is easy, easy.
