Breast lift or silicone implants? Which is better?

What are the differences between silicone implant and breast lift surgery?

Josué Montedonio, plastic surgeon, states that contrary to what many people think, silicone breast implants do not support or lift the breasts. It is intended to increase the size and often ends up being the villain, as the weight of the implant can cause the breasts to sag, which depends on several factors such as, for example, gravity, weight, age and skin type.

In the breast lift, called mastopexy, the surgeon can use the breast volume to restore the cervical projection. It is possible to combine the use of silicone implants.

For which cases is each of them indicated?

The silicone prosthesis is indicated for patients who have lost or have little breast volume for various reasons, such as weight loss, post-gestational atrophy of the glandular tissue, called pregnancy involution of the breast.

In mastopexy the indication is for the patient who intends to re-establish the projection that the breast has lost over time, either due to excess weight, gravity, or factors such as weight gain or loss, known as the accordion effect that stretches the skin, causing the loss of support.

Is one better than the other? Explain

There is nothing better or worse. It is possible to combine the two procedures in the same surgery. Generally, when the patient already has volume, it is possible to use it to restore the breast as a whole.

When you have the possibility of not needing a prosthesis, it is better because it is not necessary to use a foreign body, the patient’s breast tissue is used to shape the breast.
