Gild Your Pen: 5 Reasons to Watch the Mystical Miniseries “The Luminaries”

The plot takes the viewer to the time of the New Zealand gold rush. Gold miner Crosby Wells is killed. The courtesan Anna Wetherell has been suspected. The girl herself does not remember anything, so her story will be told from the beginning. Thus, little by little, light will be shed on a series of confusing events. The viewer will be treated to a fascinating detective novel with flashbacks, incredible landscapes and a touch of mysticism.

There are a lot of them here. The name “Luminaries” alone refers to something cosmic and mysterious. The series will feature a fortune teller with mysterious predictions, astrological connections between the characters, and fatalism.

The lovers will follow each other’s heels, but will never be able to meet. At the same time, an inexplicably strong connection can be traced between them. So strong that at a certain point one of them will begin to experience a substitution of memories. The mystical entanglement will only grow and drag the viewer further and further.

Name a bad movie Eva Green has starred in (“Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For,” “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children”). This talented actress with a gothic beauty always chooses her roles carefully. In the TV series The Luminaries, she plays Lydia Wells, the eccentric owner of a fortune-telling parlor. She is a strong, ambitious, self-confident and cunning woman. She could be called an exclusively negative character, but at a certain point, Lydia will open up and surprise the viewer.

Another leading female role was played by the pretty Eve Hewson, who became famous after the TV series “In Her Eyes”. Eve appeared as Anna Wetherell. In the story, she came to New Zealand in search of gold, but was forced to become a priestess of love. At the beginning of the film, the viewer sees a shy and motivated girl. After a series of events, Anna showed incredible resilience, refusing to become a victim.

A team of costume designers works with particular care on any film with a historical connotation. After all, the task they face is not easy: they have to recreate the clothes of that era. The cast of The Luminaries was dressed by Edward K. Gibbon. He has a lot of experience: he worked on the outfits for the series “War and Peace”, “Black Mirror”, “Courtesans”, and has already created costumes for opera artists.

Gibbon admitted that old photographs helped him a lot in preparing Luminaries. Fortunately, there was a lot of equipment: at that time, even in small towns there were photographers. The artist came up with all the costumes himself. Some of them had to be artificially aged. Each outfit turned out to be unique and thought out to the smallest detail. The viewer will be interested in luxurious bright dresses and richly embroidered costumes.

Eleanor Catton herself insisted on shooting the series in New Zealand. And I was right! Impressive landscapes not only delight the eyes, but also completely immerse the viewer in the story. The nature of this archipelago can be considered another main character of the film.

Beautiful long shots will be etched in your memory, in which you can see the magnificent infinity and see the hope of a bright future. Scenes with close-ups and long shots are shot to convey the importance of the moment. Nature seems to echo what happens to the characters. It storms in moments of tension, caresses the sun in rare moments of joy, whispers through the leaves, mixes with the dialogues.
