Another thesis that reinforces the daily work of mental health
The pursuit of excellence in sports is constant, that is, it goes well beyond physical preparation and technical skills. Maintaining concentration and calm in decisive moments plays a fundamental role in the success of professional and amateur athletes.
The study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that meditation may be as effective as antidepressants in treating depression and anxiety.
The Impact of Pairing Meditation and High Performance
This research involved reviewing 47 clinical trials with a total of 3,515 participants and found that meditation showed improvements in anxiety. “Disconnecting” from the outside world and cultivating attention to the present moment develops better awareness of oneself and one’s emotions, which can help one better cope with the stress of a competition.
Additionally, meditation has been identified as one of the improvements in sleep quality, recovery ability, pain management, and all aspects essential to overall well-being and elite athletic performance.
The expert’s word
“I worked with swimmer Thiago Pereira in his preparation for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Thiago was coming off a lot of fourth places, which increased his anxiety and undermined his performance. In Rio 2016, I also applied meditation to some athletes from the Brazilian volleyball team, with Bruninho, Lucarelli, Lucão and Éder. Through the practice of meditation and visualization, we were able to overcome the pressure of the games, helping them to face the expectations and demands of the event”, they concluded.
