Sleep Procrastination’s Revenge: If You Don’t Schedule Rest During the Day, Your Brain Will Get Revenge at Night

Raise your hand if you’ve ever been on social media in the early hours of the morning, sleepy and knowing you’ll have to wake up early the next day, but still refusing to sleep. Has this ever happened to you? You’re not an isolated case, and science has given it a curious name: revenge, sleep procrastination.

This form of procrastination is a psychological phenomenon that has attracted the attention of researchers in the Netherlands and has been described in a publication on Frontiers in Psychologyin 2014. Its name comes from the similarities in the counterproductive logic of procrastination of tasks, which causes mental problems and fatigue putting off a task that, in one way or another, you will have to do later, but with less time.

Researchers have found that this behavior is closely related to the lack of free time during the day. During the night, when tasks are completed, the brain tries to compensate by setting aside time for sleep to give the feeling that you are doing something other than working, studying, or taking care of the house.
