Picosecond technology creates micro-lesions within the skin and stimulates collagen production
Summary
Laser treatments, including picosecond lasers, are effective at reducing wrinkles and fine lines by stimulating collagen production and cell renewal.
In addition to injectable treatments, skin rejuvenation needle treatments, and the famous Morpheus 8, a powerful radiofrequency microneedling, doctors also recommend lasers for wrinkle treatment. But how effective is this treatment?
“Laser treatment is an effective technique for reducing wrinkles and fine lines. Lasers, especially picosecond lasers, work by creating controlled micro-lesions in the skin, stimulating collagen production and cell renewal. The result is firmer, smoother skin,” explains the dermatologist. Renato Sorianimember of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD), Master in Dermatology from USP and former coordinator of the Department of Lasers and Technologies at SBD.
The doctor explains that picosecond laser technology is one of the latest and most effective for treating blemishes, melasma, removing tattoos and improving skin texture, but it is also possible to treat wrinkles with the Smart Pico or Picolo lasers.
“A picosecond is equal to a second divided by trillion, that is, trillionths of a second. In the case of spot treatment, when applied, it is able to ‘crush’ the pigment, that is, break it into much smaller pieces, which makes it easier for the body to eliminate these pigments with fewer side effects,” says the doctor.
“In the case of wrinkles, the picosecond laser does not act through heating, as is common in this type of treatment, but with a photoacoustic effect, in an effect known as laser-induced optical disruption (LIOB). We are able to act on different layers of the epidermis and dermis, stimulating collagen from the inside out,” emphasizes the doctor.
This photoacoustic effect occurs in a fractional and localized way (the damage occurs only in the focal point), being a non-ablative treatment (which keeps the skin surface intact and causes less discomfort to the patient), according to the doctor.
“But leaving the first layer of skin without lesions does not change the effectiveness in stimulating neocollagenesis. One of the great advantages of the treatment is that of having a post-surgery without downtime and this does not upset the daily routine of patients”, says Dr. Renato Soriani.
The dermatologist explains that the effectiveness of the treatment depends on the depth of the wrinkles and the patient’s skin type. “In many cases, to obtain more lasting results, the laser is combined with other treatments and an adequate skin care routine,” explains the doctor. “THE consultation consulting a qualified dermatologist is essential to determine the most appropriate approach for each specific case,” he concludes.
