More than a physical space, the home is an environment of affection and personal development
Buying a property is the goal of 33% of Brazilians who have financial investments, according to data from the 2024 edition of Investor’s X-Ray, a survey produced by the Brazilian Association of Financial Entities and Capital Market (Anbima) in collaboration with DataFolha.
Although it is at the top of the wish list, owning a home represents much more than financial security, a solid asset, an income or a diversification of the investment portfolio. The truth is that Brazilians have an emotional and attachment relationship with the home.
“The house, in addition to being the reflection of a time and customs, influences the quality of life of people. It is much more than a place to live, it is the place where memories, identities and dreams are built”, says Flávia Iankowski Claro Pereira, architect, urban planner and professor of Architecture and Urban Planning at UniCuritiba, an institution that is part of Ânima Educação.
Home is a refuge
The topic is so pertinent that it even received a special chapter in the Quinto Andar housing census. The study shows what Brazilians like to do at home and why they appreciate this heritage. Cooking and entertaining friends drive this classification. Taking care of plants and decorating your home with flowers come right after.
“The house is a refuge, a place of belonging, a space where lives develop”, adds Cristiane Martins Baltar, architect, urban planner and professor at the UC (curricular unit) of Housing Design of the Architecture and Urban Planning course at UniCuritiba.

Importance of architecture
The concept of home for Brazilians is rich, full of meanings and varies from person to person, as it is shaped by factors such as culture, history and individual experiences. “The way in which users recognize this space as a welcoming home also involves architecture and design, areas that contribute through shapes, colors, quantity and quality of light, among other factors,” emphasizes Flávia Pereira.
According to Cristiane Baltar, a well-made architecture satisfies the needs of ergonomics, usability and user requirements, making it spaces more pleasant. “We cannot forget that the home is a mirror of society and changes according to culture, technology and customs. As society evolves, living spaces also change,” he says.
House of memories and dreams
The reasons why Brazilians appreciate their house it ranges from the feeling of safety, protection, refuge, belonging and welcome to the appreciation of traditions and the construction of an environment rich in multiple memories, stories and expression of personality.
For the professors of UniCuritiba the explanations are still different. As a space for coexistence and affection, the house allows it relations Interpersonal skills are improved, which are useful for sharing experiences, celebrating important moments and strengthening emotional bonds. “Another component is linked to dreams, aspirations and social status. For many people, home represents the certainty of success and quality of life”, concludes Flávia Pereira.
