The next few days should bring warm and dry weather; Understand how to take care of your health during this period and avoid major diseases
The cold has just arrived and the heat is already returning to much of Brazil. Added to this is low humidity, which in some regions can vary between 20% and 30%. This number of dry weatheralong with temperature fluctuations, they warn of health problems, especially those related to breathing.
“With the reduction of humidity, the ocular, oral and nasal membranes can dehydrate, facilitating the influence of external elements, such as microorganisms and germs, or even pollutants resulting from fires and burns”, comments the coordinator of the Nursing Course of the Anhanguera Faculty, Cláudia EF Bis Furlan.
According to her, some of the main diseases that can manifest in this situation are rhinitis, sinusitis, pneumonia and asthma. Therefore, any sign of malaise or shortness of breath should be a signal to seek professional care.
According to Dr. Cristiane Passos Dias Levy, an otolaryngologist at Hospital Paulista and a specialist in respiratory allergies, cold, pollution and some bad habits are factors that make people even more vulnerable. But how can these problems be avoided in dry weather?
Hydration is the main solution
Dr. Cláudia explains that one of the main measures on hot days is to stay well hydrated. And to do this, it is not only necessary to drink a good amount of water, but also to do it frequently.
“In other words, you need to always drink some water to avoid being thirsty. It is essential to increase your fluid intake and another tip involves cleaning your nostrils with saline solution and maintaining skin hydration through the use of moisturizing lotions,” she advises.
The ideal, according to Dr. Cristiane, is to drink, on average, eight glasses of water throughout the day, especially between breaks in physical exercise or when using the voice very intensely.
Health care
Experts offer some advice on how to best deal with heat and drought. Check out:
- Drink plenty of water to keep the airway mucosa hydrated. The ideal is to drink eight glasses throughout the day (1.6 liters). Also drink natural juice and coconut water
- Eat light meals with vegetables, eat fruit between meals
- Avoid nasal decongestants, especially without the advice of your doctor. This is because they dry out the nasal mucosa and increase irritation.
- Avoid smoking, as cigarette smoke causes allergic reactions and irritation of the mucous membranes.
- Saline solution helps to hydrate the airways. So, put a few drops in your nose to improve breathing.
- Choose times with cooler temperatures (early morning or late afternoon) to carry out your physical activities.
- Keep your home ventilated and pay special attention to cleaning items that can accumulate dust from dust mites.
- Avoid crowds and prolonged stay in closed or air-conditioned environments, as dry mucous membranes increase the risk of opportunistic coexistence of the airways
- To increase the humidity level indoors, use wet towels, containers of water or vaporizers, especially in bedrooms.
