As Géssica Geca, daughter of the birthday girl, explained, the family asked in advance if they could bring the cake to the place, and the answer was yes. The scare came when it was time to pay the bill.
Among the 659 euros (about R$4,060), customers noted a fee of 58.50 euros, or 4.50 euros (just over R$27) per guest, for the cake cutting service provided by the restaurant.
According to Geca, the cost was higher than the cake itself, which was purchased for 45 euros (R$277). Frightened by the amount, the guests disputed the surcharge, but were told that it was a rule of the establishment.
The information was confirmed by the restaurateur to the Italian newspaper Florentine Courier. The owner emphasized that, unlike other local businesses, his does not charge service fees.
“We don’t ask for any compensation and we mainly serve dishes that we produce ourselves, so we try to discourage those who bring things from outside. If we consider that in Arezzo the average rate is 2.5 euros (just over R$15) per person, the difference is not that big. My restaurant is responsible for the costs of waiters, dishwashers and other related services. We have to recover them somehow,” he explained.
Although he confirmed the accusation, the man admitted that at that moment the employees had no understanding whatsoever towards the customers.
“The rule of the restaurant is that the customers leave satisfied and when that doesn’t happen it’s always a defeat. I wasn’t there that night and my employees may have been very demanding in managing the situation that was created, perhaps cutting the usual price a little or even not charging anything for the cake. Better to have 50 euros less (R$308) and people going home happy than this misunderstanding in which we are all damaged,” he added.
