Discover the Brazilian films that could compete for the 2025 Oscar

The 97th Academy Awards® will take place on March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, USA. And Brazil can be there.

Recently, the Brazilian Film Academy released the list of films nominated to compete for a place among the nominees for the award for best international feature film.

Among the strong competitors are national productions that have received applause at international festivals, such as I’m still here, by Walter Salles, and Destination Motelby Karim Ainouz.

First, however, the Selection Committee will meet in two phases: on September 16, when six titles will be selected from those registered, and the final meeting to choose the title that will represent Brazil in the competition for a place in the Best International Film category at the Oscars®️ 2025, on the 23rd of the same month.

WITHOUT HEART

Directed by: Nara Normande and Tião

Summer 1996, coast of Alagoas. Tamara is enjoying the last weeks in the fishing village where she lives before leaving to study in Brasilia. One day, she hears about a teenager nicknamed “Heartless” because of a scar on her chest. Over the course of the summer, Tamara feels a growing attraction to this mysterious girl.

With his eyesight increasingly deteriorating and on the verge of a nervous breakdown, he finds in Florence Lizz the inspiration to create his masterpiece. Antoinette Lefèvre is an influential dealer of art that senses the value of works of art when stories of inspiration become an obsession between painters and models.

The documentary investigates the reasons that push people, in the 21st century, to pronounce the vows of Conversion of the Customs (poverty and chastity), Obedience and Stability (living and dying in the same place), and to choose to live in isolation, entering monastic life.

STOMACH 2 – THE POWERFUL CHEF

Directed by: Marcos Jorge

The fantastic and entertaining journey of the “anti-hero” Raimundo Nonato and his philosophical-culinary adventures continues. Sixteen years after the events of the first film, Nonato becomes the prison chef of chefs, enchanting both the prison director and the veteran leader of the inmates with his culinary talent and his tasty words.



CITY CAMPAIGN

The film presents two stories about migration between the city and the countryside. In the first part, after a dam collapse floods her homeland, rural worker Joana moves to São Paulo to visit her sister Tânia. In the second, Flávia moves with Mara, her partner, to the farm inherited from her father, who recently passed away. Nature forces the two women to face frustrations and deal with memories and ghosts.

I’M STILL HERE

Francisca and Carlos struggle to adapt to their new reality after the suicide of their only son, Felipe. Immersed in fantasies, fears and melancholy, the couple separates and each lives radical experiences in their own way.

DESTINATION MOTEL

Directed by: Karim Ainouz

The Destino Motel of the title is a roadside hotel run by Elias and his beautiful, frustrated wife Dayana. When 21-year-old Heraldo finds himself at the motel after failing to pull a job and escaping the police and the gang he had failed, Dayana finds herself intrigued and lets him stay.
