What causes muscle hypertrophy?
According to Jessica Moraes, Physical Education teacher and personal trainer, it is necessary to first understand that there are two types of muscle hypertrophy: myofibrillar hypertrophy and the sarcoplasmic hypertrophy.
Myofibrillar hypertrophy is the growth of the parts responsible for muscle contraction. Sarcoplasmic hypertrophy refers to the increase in muscle glycogen stores, which is the element that stores muscle energy.
“In this case, myofibrillar will help with strength and speed, while sarcoplasmic growth helps give the body more energy and endurance,” explains Jéssica Moraes.
Therefore, muscle hypertrophy can be achieved primarily through strength and resistance training. “Repeatedly challenging your muscles will make them adapt and increase in size and strength,” explains the expert.
