What is brunch? Understand how this practice has become popular in recent years

Brunch has become popular among Brazilians and offers a fun option for weekend mornings.

If we had to summarize in a few words what brunch is, we could say that it is half breakfast and half lunch. A perfect meal for those weekends or holidays when we wake up too late for breakfast but we don’t feel like having a full and traditional meal for lunch.

The term brunch comes from the combination of breakfast (breakfast, in English) and lunch (lunch), and would have first appeared in 1895 in a column by the British Guy Beringer for the newspaper Hunter’s Weekly.

The text cites the term as a solution to be able to extend and properly enjoy Saturday night, with a meal that allows one to wake up later on Sunday (which, for the author, would be not only useless, but ridiculous), when, on the contrary, according to his words, “the world was already warm, or at least not so cold”.

Beringer argues that brunch should essentially combine aspects of breakfast, such as tea and coffee, with classic lunch ingredients and dishes. Beer and whiskey could be used as alternatives to hot drinks, in a fun and perfect moment to exercise sociability, something that breakfast suppresses, according to the journalist.

Since this first variation, the face of brunch has evolved and adapted, but many of the issues raised by Beringer remain alive.

What can’t be missing from a brunch?

The relaxed brunch atmosphere has remained at the heart of the concept. According to Kelly Lobos, who has been organizing the festival for over eight years Brunch Weekendthe secret to a good brunch is to offer an unpretentious but always very complete meal.

“It’s not necessary to follow a typical menu like the one we’re used to, with a starter, main course and dessert,” he explains. Among the places that serve brunch in Brazil and around the world, it’s common to find menus with varied foods, balancing sweet and savory, and some are more similar to breakfast, others to lunch.

The way brunch is served also changes a lot, it can be offered as a buffet, where you can taste dishes and proposals selected by the facilities, or à la carte, with proposals sold separately, so you can create and balance the experience to your liking. way.

Coffee, fruit, sandwiches, cakes, quiches, salads, bread and pasta are almost guaranteed at a brunch. And Lobos also remembers eggs, also essential for brunch, of which Benedictine and poached eggs are some of the most served variations.

“I often say that brunch is an open-plan lunch with breakfast items.”

“Brunch has become increasingly popular precisely because of its versatility. The fact that it is a more “informal” and unpretentious meal means that it serves as a moment of fraternization and socialization with friends.”

Lobos also attributes the success of brunch in Brazil to contact with foreign culture, both from immigrants who were used to it and came to the country, and from social networks, establishments and events, such as Brunch Weekend, which promote the practice.
