Collaboration of Brazilian sustainable and inclusive crochet shows in Paris

Designer Gustavo Silvestre, who created Projeto Ponto Firme in 2015 with released inmates from the São Paulo prison system, presented his fourth collaboration with creator Kevin Germanier at Paris Fashion Week this Tuesday (24/9). The Swiss designer’s show, inspired by the signs of the zodiac, featured 10 looks created in collaboration with the Brazilian.

The collection co-created by the duo, which explores new possibilities in crochet, was entirely made in Brazil by Gustavo Silvestre and his team of artisans, with many drapes, overlaps and new volumes.

In collaboration with the Círculo lines, the colorful and exuberant looks also feature reused materials, such as waste from the plastic industry and metalloids from the folklore of Carnival and Pernambuco.

Upcycling is one of the common points between the two designers. In this Paris Fashion Week process alone, 16 people were involved, requiring more than 800 hours of work.

Gustavo Silvestre embraces two important social initiatives. The first is the Ponto Firme volunteer project, which he conceived in 2015 and which has brought education, transformation and art to the prison system. And the second is Ateliê Ponto Firme, which opened in 2020, a second phase and expansion of the initial project, now focused on training and providing opportunities to people in situations of social vulnerability, who are very talented, but who, due to their socioeconomic conditions, would have difficulty accessing the formal fashion industry. Today there are 19 students in the studio who help make pieces created, supervised and finished by Gustavo.

For this show there was no shortage of vibrant colors and colorful and extravagant looks, with a lot of volume and grandeur, but the creators also brought other lighter and more transparent productions, decorated with recycled sequins, for example. “We have very conceptual looks. Some weigh more than 15 kg and others are very light and delicate,” revealed Gustavo.

Germanier not only celebrates the extraordinary creativity of upcycling, but also supports young talent from all over the world. Among the 24 daring pieces shown for summer 2025 are innovative creations made from unexpected materials, such as plastic curtains and leftover VHS tapes used by Alain Roche during his suspended performance at the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games.

Partnership

Regarding the partnership with Germanier, the designer from Pernambuco believes that there is already a relationship of mutual trust in the work and this allows the creations to be even more fluid. “Without a doubt, we are increasingly aligned. We understand how the other’s process works and this translates into increasingly fantastic creations. Often I start the creative process here and Kevin embraces the idea. And the opposite also. It happens when he presents an idea and we refine it until we reach the final result. Showing the work that we have been developing and thinking about for months is always a challenge, even more so because it is the most important fashion week in the world, where the creations are always surprised and this is very satisfying”, stated Gustavo in the promotional material.

Germanier is also full of praise for Gustavo’s work. “The innovation and the way he works with crochet is something enchanting, that really needs to be shown to the world,” he says. For Silvestre, crochet is more than just a technique. “We believe that every crochet stitch creates a cycle of social, environmental and economic transformation,” he says.
