The cardiologist indicates the seven main precautions that must be taken throughout life to preserve heart health
Today we celebrate the World Heart Day (29/09). The event aims to raise people’s awareness of the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle from childhood. This is because this is the main way to prevent the onset of cardiovascular diseases, which represent the main cause of death in Brazil. According to the Ministry of Health, the country records around 400,000 deaths per year.
“We know that cardiovascular diseases are one of the leading causes of death in the world and no one wants to be a statistic. That is why I have brought some necessary measures to prevent and control these diseases,” says Dr. Thalita Merluzzi, cardiologist at the Albert Einstein Hospital. The professional highlights some fundamental actions to prevent and control diseases that affect heart health. Check:
7 pillars to take care of your heart health
1. Pay attention to your diet: A balanced and healthy diet is essential for heart health. Therefore, try to include foods rich in fiber, such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and avoid processed foods high in saturated and trans fats. Also, prioritize good proteins like fish, chicken, and meat without excess fat.
2. Exercise regularly: Physical activity is one of the best ways to keep your heart healthy. Therefore, dedicate at least 30 minutes a day to aerobic exercises, such as walking, running, swimming or cycling and alternate them with exercises that promote strengthening such as weights, functional training and pilates.
3. Maintain a healthy weight: Excess weight can put additional pressure on the heart and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Therefore, it is important to maintain an adequate weight through a balanced diet and regular physical activity.
4. Don’t smoke: Smoking is a major cause of cardiovascular disease. Smoking damages blood vessels, increases blood pressure and reduces the amount of oxygen available to the heart. So, if you are a smoker, it’s time to quit this habit.
5. Control Stress: Chronic stress is associated with a higher risk of heart disease. Look for healthy ways to deal with stress, such as meditating, practicing yoga, or making time for relaxing activities.
6. Get Regular Checkups: See a doctor regularly for routine tests and to check your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels. This will help you identify any cardiovascular problems early and take the necessary steps to prevent or control them.
7. Reduce alcohol consumption: Excessive alcohol consumption can increase blood pressure and triglyceride levels, putting heart health at risk.
Prevention is the best way
“Remember that prevention is always better than cure. So start adopting these fundamental actions in your lifestyle now to prevent and control cardiovascular diseases. Take care of your heart and live a long and healthy life”, concludes the specialist.
