WHO and TikTok sign agreement to disseminate reliable health information

The aim is to promote healthy behaviors and actions, the UN agency says

According to one in four studies, one in four young adults actively searches for news content on social media World Health Organization (WHO). Therefore, the organization has partnered with the TikTok provide platform users with reliable, evidence-based health information.

The objective, explains the WHO in a note, is to promote healthy behaviors and actions in an increasingly digitalized world. TikTok currently has more than one billion users.

“We know that millions of people turn to TikTok every day to share and find community in all areas of their lives, including well-being, and we are committed to ensuring they can find trusted information on this important topic,” said Valiant Richey, global head of outreach and partnerships at TikTok.

Jeremy Farrar, WHO’s chief scientist, is also confident. “This collaboration could prove to be a game changer in how platforms can be more socially responsible. The intersection of health and technology offers an opportunity to reach people of all ages, where they are and when they want to access it.”

The new partnership is an initiative of the WHO Fides network, which has been mobilizing health content creators since 2020 to fight misinformation and promote news based on scientific evidence. Today the network has more than 800 creators, reaching 150 million people across multiple platforms.

The collaboration will expand efforts around a range of relevant health topics, translating science-based information into video content, with greater support for influencers and using TikTok creator training programs.

“Creators who understand the needs of their audiences have a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between science and everyday life. This is where WHO can step in to support influencers in providing evidence-based information, ensuring that conversations about health on platforms like TikTok are impactful and informative,” said Alain Labrique, director of digital health and innovation at WHO.
