48-year-old actor dies 2 months after diagnosis of rare skin cancer; understand the disease

Gavil Creel, of ‘American Horror Story’ fame, died on Monday (30) after being diagnosed with an aggressive type of skin cancer

The American actor Gavin Creel died this Monday (30), at the age of 48, victim of a rare peripheral nerve cancer. The actor, known for his participation in the series “American Horror Story”, received the diagnosis only two months ago.

According to the New York Times, the actor was diagnosed with metastatic amelanotic peripheral nerve sheath sarcoma, a rare and aggressive skin cancer.

What cancer has affected the actor?

In an interview with Earth youDermatologist Lucas Miranda explains that amelanotic peripheral nerve sheath sarcoma is a rare type of malignant tumor that affects the cells that form the protective sheath of peripheral nerves, without producing melanin, making visual diagnosis difficult.

Early signs may include a painful mass or lump near a nerve, tingling, weakness, or loss of sensation.

Risk factors and diagnosis

Known risk factors for developing amelanotic peripheral nerve sheath sarcomas include a history of neurofibromatosis type 1, specific genetic mutations, and prior radiation exposure.

The doctor says the diagnosis involves imaging tests such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT), as well as a biopsy of the affected tissue for histopathological analysis.

Treatment

“In the case of metastatic amelanotic sarcoma, treatment options include surgery to remove the tumor, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and, in some cases, targeted therapies. Dermatology helps in early diagnosis and evaluation of skin spread,” explains the dermatologist.

The specialist underlines that the prognosis of metastatic cases is reserved and continuous monitoring is important to monitor the progress of the disease and the response to treatment, especially in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.
