THE summer is now upon us and, with the arrival of the warmer days, many are wondering how heat affects metabolism and what precautions need to be taken to keep the body healthy, as high temperatures can have a significant impact on our health.
However, while heat can speed up your metabolism, that doesn’t mean your body functions better in heat. “Heat causes the body to expend more energy to regulate internal temperature, which can speed up the metabolism. However, this acceleration is not necessarily beneficial if the body is not well prepared,” explains endocrinologist Gisele Lorenzoni.
In addition to the impact on metabolism, the specialist highlights the importance of maintaining a balanced diet and constant hydration to avoid health problems during the heat. “It is essential to consume light foods rich in water, such as fruit, vegetables and greens, which facilitate digestion and help nourish the body,” explains the endocrinologist.
Water is essential in hot weather
The doctor points out that, on hot days, the body loses more fluids, which can damage digestion and other metabolic processes. “Hydration is a key factor. Drinking water regularly and replacing lost electrolytes with isotonic drinks or natural juices can prevent dehydration and keep the body functioning properly,” he adds.
Lorenzoni reiterates that it is necessary to balance nutrition, hydration and physical exercise, especially in hot environments. “Practicing physical activities in high temperatures can be dangerous if you don’t pay due attention. Prefer to exercise at cooler times and don’t forget to constantly hydrate yourself,” he advises.
According to the endocrinologist, although the metabolism may be more active on hot days, it is also more susceptible to overload. “It makes no sense to speed up your metabolism at the expense of dehydration or a bad diet. Balance is always the best path to health”, he concludes.
