This was reported by the international news site Barron’sthe victims, who are between 50 and 60 years old, were informed, after a blood sample, that cancerous precursor cells to uterine cancer had been identified and that, for this reason, it was necessary to remove the organ.
The situation was discovered only after the hospital noticed an unexplained increase in cases of uterine cancer and launched an investigation to see whether there had actually been an increase in the disease or whether it was an error. After the error was confirmed, the institution pledged to review all similar cases and financially compensate the victims.
“We are deeply sorry for what happened. Removal of the uterus is a major operation with serious and irreversible consequences,” said Johan Lugnegård, medical director of Uppsala University Hospital.
