Early diagnosis of the tumor saves the child from brain complications

Imagine that your child starts to feel a lot of pain in his neck. You, as a mother, decide to take him to the doctor for a complete evaluation and discover an early stage tumor on the left side of the brain. This was exactly the situation Carly MacKenzie, 26, experienced with her son Mason, 8.

In January, Carly became suspicious about her son’s headaches and constant tiredness, especially at the end of the day. The child’s ophthalmologist downplayed the symptoms and recommended only follow-up care. However, Carly, following her maternal instincts, chose to undergo a more thorough medical evaluation.

An MRI, taken just two days after he went to hospital, revealed that Mason had an early-stage cancerous tumor on the left side of his brain. In an interview with Daily mirrorCarly reported that doctors considered her decision essential for early treatment of the tumor.

“The doctors said if we had waited just a few more weeks, we would be telling a very different story,” Carly recalls.

The tumor, the size of a grape, was successfully removed in March this year. Thanks to the speed of diagnosis, the tumor was removed before compromising other brain functions, and Mason recovered quickly. “He was supposed to be hospitalized for up to two months, but was discharged on the fifth day,” Carly added.

It took six months of intensive chemotherapy, with three types of treatments, and the last session took place in October. Mason is now celebrating his period of remission and is awaiting a further test after Christmas to confirm he is completely cancer-free.

Carly, who works as a support professional for victims of domestic abuse, stressed the importance of listening to your instincts, especially when it comes to your children. He acknowledges that tests are still needed to know what Mason’s future will look like, but celebrates the fact that he is healthy and cure-free, at least for now.

“I can’t promise Mason he’ll never need treatment again, but it’s good to see him well now. He is strong and for us this is already a huge victory,” concluded Carly.
