Find out how to design the lighting in your home

The type of light you choose can make a difference in your decorating project.

In addition to enhancing and making the environment more harmonious, lighting also influences the emotions of those who experience the space. Therefore it is essential to plan this part of the decoration very carefully. “Today we have different types of lighting and technology that allow us to make the environment more welcoming or lively,” explains interior designer Larissa Santo. According to her, it is possible to direct the light on what you want to be highlighted or even move the point of attention away to hide something.

Harmony and practicality

Architect and urban planner Paula Blankenstein highlights the importance of lighting for the practicality and harmony of the home. “Without the entry of light, we cannot live, work or feel comfortable in our home, work or leisure. Without lighting we could not live in the designed space. It also allows for better air circulation,” he explains .

Where to start?

Some points are fundamental when thinking about a lighting project. “Let’s start with the structure, does this room have a ceiling or not? Will there be a ceiling? This will help in the main decisions regarding the type of lighting that will be used”, analyzes Larissa Santo.

According to the professional, another point to think about is what the use of this will be environmentso you can choose the lamp temperature, power and incidence of light. He also recommends thinking about the arrangement of the furniture that will make up the space. This is because it is important to know where you intend to place each object, to facilitate the positioning of the lamps.

Types of lighting

To make working on your project easier, it’s a good idea to understand the difference between direct and indirect lighting. “Indirect lighting is used when you don’t want to focus on something, such as an LED strip on a molding or a tear in the plaster,” explains Larissa Santo.

Direct lighting, in turn, focuses on exactly what you want to highlight or show. “It can be used, for example, in a corridor to display paintings and photos or on a shelf with a spot showing the objects present,” explains the interior designer.

Choose the lamps

When you choose the colors of lamps, it is important to understand the effect each has on the environment and objects. According to Larissa Santo, yellow and white light distort color, while neutral light, since it is more similar to sunlight, causes this effect less. “When we choose the lamp, there is a reproduction index which usually has the acronym IRC. We always prefer the one greater than or equal to 80”, he explains.

Again according to Larissa Santo, the index measures from 0 to 100, the closer it is to 100, the lower the color distortion. “This allows us to work better with color and, when choosing the color of furniture and fabrics, it will not be affected by the transformation of light”, he concludes.
